- 1 clear glass jar with lid (Mason jars work well)
- 1/2 cup water regular tap water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil or baby oil
- blue or purple food coloring a few drops
- 1 tsp non-toxic glow-in-the-dark paint or glowing powder find at craft stores
- 1 tsp silver or holographic glitter
- 1 small LED tea light or flashlight for illumination
Step 1: In a small bowl, pour in 1/2 cup of water. Add a few drops of blue or purple food coloring and stir gently until beautifully blended.
Step 2: Mix in 1 teaspoon of non-toxic glow-in-the-dark paint or glowing powder into the colored water. Stir until fully dissolved and well incorporated.
Step 3: Carefully pour the glowing, colored water into your clear glass jar until it's about halfway full.
Step 4: Slowly pour the vegetable or baby oil into the jar, creating a distinct layer over the water. Fill the jar almost full, leaving a small space at the top.
Step 5: Sprinkle in the silver or holographic glitter.
Step 6: In a dark room or with dimmed lights, place your small LED tea light or flashlight underneath or behind the jar to illuminate the glow-in-the-dark elements.
Step 7: Secure the lid tightly on your jar. Gently shake or swirl to mix the oil and water momentarily, creating shimmering 'thunderclouds' and 'lightning' flashes.
Customization: Experiment with different food coloring (green, yellow, red), extra sparkle (star sequins, craft confetti), or themed jars (galaxy, lava lamp). For a calming sensory jar, you can add a drop or two of lavender essential oil (if not for small children).
Tips for Success: Always use non-toxic glow paint/powder. Pour oil slowly for distinct layering. View in a truly dark room for the most dramatic effect. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed before shaking. A small flashlight works well if an LED tea light is unavailable.
Storage: Store at room temperature with the lid tightly sealed. Recharge the glow by holding the jar under bright light for a few minutes. The oil and water layers will re-separate over time; simply give the jar a good shake to re-create the thunder effect.
