Total Time 10 minutes

Equipment

  • Cups
  • Stirring Utensil
  • Hands
  • Wax Paper or Old Placemat

Ingredients

For the Borax Solution

  • 1/2 cup Warm Water helps everything dissolve smoothly
  • 1 tbsp Borax Powder activator for bounce, found in laundry aisle

For Each Bouncy Ball Color Base

  • 2 tbsp White School Glue classic Elmer's type glue
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch for smooth texture and less stickiness
  • a few drops Food Coloring or Gel Dye for vibrant colors
  • Glitter optional, for extra sparkle
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Paint optional, for an extra cool twist
  • 1/2 tbsp Borax Solution prepared in Step 1, added to each color base

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prep Your Borax Solution: In one cup, pour ½ cup of warm water, then add 1 tablespoon of borax powder. Stir really well until all the borax crystals have dissolved completely. This is your activator.
  • Step 2: Mix Your Color Base: In a separate cup, combine 2 tablespoons of white school glue, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, and a few drops of your chosen food coloring or gel dye. If using glitter or glow-in-the-dark paint, stir it in now. Mix until smooth and beautifully colored.
  • Step 3: The Magic Reaction Begins: Add just ½ tablespoon of your borax solution (from Step 1) to your colorful glue mixture. Stir quickly! You'll notice it immediately starts to come together, forming a clumpy, gummy blob.
  • Step 4: Knead to Perfection: Gently scoop out the clumpy mixture and start kneading it with your hands for about 2 minutes. It might feel sticky at first, but with persistence, it will become smooth, less sticky, and super pliable.
  • Step 5: Repeat for More Colors: To create more colors, repeat Steps 2-4 for each additional color you want to make. It's recommended to use a separate small bowl for each color to keep them distinct.
  • Step 6: Create Your Rainbow Masterpiece: Once you have all your colored blobs, take small pieces of each color and press them together. Gently roll them between your palms, applying even pressure, until they form a perfect, vibrant sphere. Your bouncy ball is ready!

Notes

Tips for Success: Precise measurements, especially for the borax solution, are key for consistency. If your ball feels too sticky, keep kneading it for another minute or two; the warmth of your hands helps activate the mixture. Avoid adding too much borax solution too quickly, as it can make the ball brittle. Protect your work surface with wax paper or a placemat for easy cleanup. This is a great activity for kids, but ensure close supervision as borax should not be ingested.
Substitutions & Additions: Get creative with colors by mixing food colorings. Add a tiny drop of skin-safe essential oil for a scented ball. Experiment with small beads or sand for different textures, though this might affect the bounce. Adjust the amount of glue to make mini or giant bouncy balls.
Storage: Store homemade bouncy balls in an airtight container or Ziploc bag to prevent them from drying out. If making multiple single-color balls, store them separately for the first day or two to prevent color bleeding. They typically last a few weeks to a month before losing their bounce or drying out.
Safety Note: Borax is not safe for ingestion. Always supervise young children closely during this activity to ensure they do not put the mixture or finished bouncy balls in their mouths.
Troubleshooting Stickiness: If your bouncy ball is too sticky, keep kneading it. If it remains very sticky after a couple of minutes, lightly dab your finger in the borax solution and rub it on the ball, then continue kneading. Do not add too much borax.
Glue Type: For best results and the desired bouncy texture, use white school glue (like Elmer's).
