Equipment

  • Air fryer (or sheet pan)
  • Large skillet
  • 7x11 inch casserole dish
  • Small bowl
  • Whisk

Ingredients

For the Cheeseburger French Fry Bake

  • 2 pounds ground beef 80/20 for best flavor, but lean works too
  • 28 ounce bag shoestring French fries crispy is key
  • 10.5 ounce can cream of mushroom soup
  • 10.5 ounce can cheddar cheese soup
  • 1/2 yellow onion diced
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese for the top layer
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

For the Burger Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon pickle juice the secret ingredient!
  • 1/2 teaspoon dehydrated onions
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Step 1: Preheat your air fryer and cook the French fries according to the package directions until golden and irresistible. Set aside to cool slightly. If you don't have an air fryer, bake them on a sheet pan until extra golden.
  • Step 2: While fries are cooking, preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C).
  • Step 3: In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and diced onion together. Break up the beef as it cooks. Once fully cooked, add the minced garlic and cook for 30-45 seconds until aromatic. Season generously with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • Step 4: Stir the cream of mushroom soup and cheddar cheese soup into your beef mixture until beautifully combined and creamy.
  • Step 5: Transfer the beef and soup mixture into a 7x11 inch casserole dish and spread it out evenly. Layer the perfectly crispy French fries right on top. Finally, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the fries.
  • Step 6: Pop your casserole into the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and calling your name. Do not overbake to avoid dried-out beef.
  • Step 7: While your casserole bakes, prepare the burger sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, dehydrated onions, and black pepper until perfectly smooth and creamy.
  • Step 8: Once the casserole is out of the oven, hot and bubbly, drizzle the irresistible burger sauce all over it just before serving. Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Not a beef fan? You can easily swap the ground beef for ground turkey, ground chicken, or even a plant-based crumble. For extra veggies and flavor, sauté some diced bell peppers or mushrooms along with the onion. While cheddar is classic, try a mix of cheeses like Colby Jack, Monterey Jack, or even a little Pepper Jack. For gourmet touches, scatter crispy bacon bits, chopped green onions, or jalapeño slices after saucing. If you love a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture or burger sauce. If you don't have cream of mushroom or cheddar cheese soup, you could try a combination of condensed cream of chicken soup and a can of Nacho cheese sauce for a similar creamy, cheesy base. To make it a low-carb dish, replace the French fries with roasted cauliflower florets or a layer of shredded zucchini.
Tips for Success: Crispy fries are non-negotiable—cook them until truly crispy to prevent sogginess in the bake. Always drain excess fat from your ground beef to prevent a greasy casserole. Don't overbake; the goal is melted cheese and heated-through ingredients, not dried-out beef. You can prep ahead by cooking the ground beef mixture and whisking together the burger sauce a day in advance; store separately in airtight containers in the fridge, then assemble and bake when ready.
Storage: Store any leftover Cheeseburger French Fry Bake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or the whole dish in a 300°F (150°C) oven until bubbly and hot. Freezing is not recommended as the French fries tend to get quite soggy upon thawing and reheating.
