Equipment

  • Large Pitcher
  • Long Spoon
  • Serving Glasses

Ingredients

  • 750 ml Dark Red Grape Juice Choose a good quality, deep red grape juice for the best color and flavor.
  • 1 cup Cranberry-Grape Juice chilled
  • 1/4 cup Raspberry Syrup or Raspberry Juice Concentrate If using concentrate, ensure it's unsweetened or adjust other sugars accordingly.
  • 2 tbsp Pomegranate Molasses or Tart Cherry Juice
  • 1 cup Blackberries
  • 1 cup Red Grapes Halved
  • 2 Black Plums

Optional Garnishes

  • Blood Orange Slices for a pop of color and citrusy aroma
  • Cinnamon Stick for a warm, inviting spice note
  • Star Anise for an exotic aroma and visual drama
  • Black Sugar for rimming glasses
  • Ice for serving
  • Lemon wedge for rimming glasses

Instructions

  • Step 1: Pit and slice black plums into bite-sized pieces. Halve red grapes. Rinse blackberries, grapes, and plums under cold water.
  • Step 2: In a large pitcher, combine dark red grape juice, chilled cranberry-grape juice, raspberry syrup (or concentrate), and pomegranate molasses (or tart cherry juice). Stir well with a long spoon to blend.
  • Step 3: Gently stir in the prepared blackberries, grapes, and sliced plums. Optionally, add a few blood orange slices or cinnamon sticks for extra pizzazz.
  • Step 4: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours, or ideally 4-6 hours, or even overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  • Step 5: When ready to serve, pour the chilled sangria over ice. For an extra touch of "black magic," rim glasses with black sugar (using a lemon wedge) before pouring. Garnish each glass with extra berries, a fresh blood orange slice, or star anise. Serve immediately.

Notes

Make it Boozy: This recipe is a fantastic base for an alcoholic sangria. Add 1 to 1.5 cups of a dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon), a splash of brandy, or even plain vodka when combining the other liquids in Step 2.
Substitutions & Additions: Experiment with other dark fruits like pitted black cherries, blueberries, or sliced figs for more depth. If a sweeter drink is preferred, add a tablespoon or two of maple syrup or agave nectar to taste. For a warm spice note, include a few cloves or a thin slice of fresh ginger. For a lighter, fizzy drink, top off each glass with a splash of sparkling water or ginger ale just before serving.
Tips for Success: Chill time is key for flavor development; do not skip this step! Only add ice to individual glasses when serving to avoid diluting the sangria. Taste and adjust for sweetness or tartness before serving. The fruit that has soaked up the sangria flavors is a delightful bonus. This recipe can be prepared 24-48 hours in advance, allowing flavors to deepen further.
Storage: Store any leftovers covered tightly in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. The fruit will continue to soften and may get a bit mushy after a few days, but the liquid will still be perfectly delicious.
