Equipment

  • Pitcher
  • Punch Bowl (optional)
  • Shallow Dish (optional)

Ingredients

For the Sangria

  • 1 bottle dry red wine 750 mL, e.g., Merlot, Grenache, or a lighter Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1 apple thinly sliced (Granny Smith for tart, Honeycrisp for sweet)
  • 1 blood orange sliced into rounds (or regular orange if not available)
  • 2 tbsp sugar adjust to taste
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1.5 cups sparkling apple cider or ginger ale use cider for sweeter, ginger ale for drier/spiced
  • ice cubes for serving

Optional Garnishes

  • cinnamon sticks
  • black or orange sugar for rimming glasses
  • Halloween-themed cocktail picks or gummy eyeballs

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare Glass Rims (Optional): In a shallow dish, combine your sugar with a few drops of black or orange food coloring (if using colored sugar). Stir until vibrant, then let it sit for a few minutes to dry slightly. Moisten the rim of each glass with a lemon or orange wedge, then gently dip and twist into the colored sugar for an even coating. Set aside.
  • Step 2: Combine Ingredients: In a large pitcher or festive punch bowl, pour in the entire bottle of dry red wine. Add the thinly sliced apple and blood orange rounds. Sprinkle in the sugar and ground cinnamon. Stir everything well until the sugar begins to dissolve.
  • Step 3: Chill: Cover the pitcher or bowl and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours. For optimal flavor development, chilling overnight is even better, allowing the fruit to infuse the wine.
  • Step 4: Just Before Serving: Remove the sangria from the fridge and give it a gentle stir. Pour in the sparkling apple cider or ginger ale to add the delightful fizz. If serving immediately, you can add ice cubes directly to the pitcher; otherwise, add ice to individual glasses to prevent dilution.
  • Step 5: Serve and Garnish: Pour the chilled sangria into your prepared, sugar-rimmed glasses. Garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick, a fun Halloween-themed cocktail pick, or extra fresh fruit slices. Serve immediately.

Notes

The beauty of sangria is how forgiving and customizable it is! Feel free to play around and make it your own spooky signature drink.
Substitutions & Additions: You can use a dry white wine (like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc) or rosé instead of red wine. Add other fruits like grapes, pomegranate arils, sliced plums, or even frozen berries (which double as ice cubes). Maple syrup or agave nectar can replace granulated sugar. For an alcoholic kick, add about ½ cup of brandy, orange liqueur, or spiced rum along with the red wine. For a non-alcoholic version, swap red wine for cranberry juice or grape juice, and increase the sparkling apple cider or ginger ale.
Tips for Success: Chill time is crucial; aim for at least 1-2 hours, or even overnight for optimal flavor development. Add the sparkling apple cider or ginger ale right before serving to ensure maximum fizziness. Always taste and adjust sweetness before adding the sparkling component. Add ice to individual glasses rather than the pitcher to prevent dilution, or use frozen fruit for a non-diluting chill.
Storage: Store any remaining sangria (without ice or the sparkling component) in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. If the sparkling component was added to the entire batch, the fizziness will fade, but the flavors will still be good for a day or so.
