Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Tofu press Recommended, or paper towels/clean towel and something heavy
  • Medium-sized bowl

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu (14 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prep Your Tofu: First things first, you need to get the moisture out of your tofu. Press it really well using a tofu press, or wrap it in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel and place something heavy on top for about 15-20 minutes. This is crucial for crispiness! Once pressed, cut the block into bite-sized cubes – aim for pieces roughly the same size so they cook evenly.
  • Flavor Boost: Grab a medium-sized bowl. Add the soy sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Add your tofu cubes to the bowl and gently toss them until they're all nicely coated in the flavorful marinade.
  • Get Crispy: Now, sprinkle the cornstarch over the tofu. Toss again, gently but thoroughly, making sure every single cube gets a light dusting of that white magic. This is what's going to create that amazing crispy crust!
  • Air Fryer Time! Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Load 'Em Up: Carefully arrange the coated tofu cubes in the air fryer basket. Make sure they're in a single layer with a little space between them. Don't overcrowd the basket, or they'll steam instead of crisp! You might need to cook in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  • Air Fry Away: Cook for 15–18 minutes. About halfway through (around 7-9 minutes), give the basket a good shake to ensure they brown evenly on all sides. They're done when they're beautifully golden brown and super crispy!
  • Serve Warm: Carefully remove the nuggets from the air fryer. Let them cool just slightly (they'll be hot!) before serving. Dip them in your favorite sauce and enjoy that crunch!

Notes

Tips for Success: Press That Tofu! The drier the tofu, the crispier it will get. Don't Crowd the Basket: Air needs to circulate. Cook in batches if necessary. Shake, Shake, Shake: Shaking the basket halfway through helps ensure even cooking and crisping. Adjust Cook Time: Air fryers vary! Keep an eye on them and adjust the time as needed. Seasoning is Key: Don't be shy with the spices.
Storage Instructions: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat and bring back some crispiness, pop them back in the air fryer for a few minutes at 350°F (175°C).
FAQ: You need to press the tofu to remove excess moisture, which allows it to absorb flavors better and get crispy. Yes, you can bake these instead of air frying at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway. Serve with dipping sauces, over rice bowls, in wraps/tacos, on salads, or alongside roasted vegetables. You can use different spice blends.
