Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups chopped dried figs
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions
 

  • Step 1: In a medium saucepan, combine chopped dried figs and ½ cup water. Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, or until the figs are soft and have absorbed most of the water. Add another tablespoon or two of water if the mixture becomes too dry.
  • Step 2: Carefully transfer the softened figs, along with any remaining cooking liquid, into a food processor. Add the honey, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  • Step 3: Process the mixture until it is wonderfully smooth and creamy. Stop a few times to scrape down the sides with a spatula to ensure even blending, pulsing until you achieve a velvety consistency.
  • Step 4: Spoon the finished spread into an airtight container or cute jars. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the spread to thicken to its ideal consistency.

Notes

This versatile spread can be spiced with a pinch of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom, brightened with orange or lemon zest, or given crunch with finely chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds stirred in after processing. For an adult twist, a splash of brandy, rum, or Grand Marnier can be added during the last few minutes of simmering or blended in at the end. When simmering figs, ensure a gentle simmer and avoid overcooking. Adjust consistency by adding more water or orange juice for a thinner spread. Store in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks, or freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
