Equipment

  • Small bowl
  • Large bowl
  • floured surface
  • lightly greased bowl
  • Oven
  • pizza cutter or sharp knife
  • Baking sheet
  • Airtight container

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups warm water (110°F) Make sure your water isn't too hot, or it'll kill the yeast!
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Feeds the yeast and helps it get bubbly.
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast The magic ingredient that makes the dough rise!
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour I like using unbleached, but all-purpose works great.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavors.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Adds richness and flavor. Plus extra for greasing
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter For that irresistible buttery flavor and shine.
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder That signature Pizza Hut garlic taste.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Italian seasoning A touch of herbs for extra depth.
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt A little extra salt to balance the flavors.
  • 0.25 cup grated Parmesan cheese For a cheesy kick (highly recommend!).

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil; stir until just combined.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the dough and roll it into a 12x8 inch rectangle. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut it into 8-10 strips.
  • Place the breadsticks on a greased baking sheet. Brush them generously with melted butter, then sprinkle with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and Parmesan cheese (if using).
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Brush with the remaining melted butter right out of the oven for extra shine and flavor. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Feel free to experiment! Try adding herbs like rosemary or oregano. Instead of Parmesan, use other cheeses like Asiago or Romano. For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes. Don't skip the kneading! It develops the gluten, resulting in softer breadsticks. Make sure your yeast is fresh. Expired yeast won't activate properly. For extra flavor, use a good quality olive oil. You can prep the dough ahead of time. Just store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before shaping and baking. Store leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. They're best enjoyed fresh, but they still taste great the next day! You can freeze these before or after baking. Reheat in the oven or toaster oven.
