Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Large Pitcher
  • Lemon Juicer
  • Whisk or Spoon
  • Tall Glasses

Ingredients

For the Brewed Tea

  • 4 cups water, boiling for brewing tea
  • 2 bags family-size black tea bags good quality, like Lipton or Luzianne

For the Lemonade Simple Syrup

  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water, boiling for simple syrup
  • 0.75 cup fresh lemon juice from 4 large lemons, freshly squeezed is key!

For Assembling and Garnish

  • 2 cups ice for chilling the mixture
  • fresh ice for serving
  • lemon slices for garnish, optional
  • fresh mint or basil sprigs for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Step 1: In a saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil. Add the 2 family-size tea bags, then immediately remove the saucepan from the heat and let the tea bags steep for about 10 minutes. Carefully discard the tea bags and transfer the cooled tea to a large pitcher.
  • Step 2: In a separate clean saucepan, combine 1 cup boiling water and 1½ cups sugar. Stir over medium heat until all the sugar crystals have completely dissolved, creating a simple syrup. (Optional: Add a few sprigs of fresh mint or basil to the warm simple syrup to infuse, then remove after a few minutes).
  • Step 3: Juice 4 large lemons to get about ¾ cup of fresh lemon juice. Pour the simple syrup into the fresh lemon juice and stir well to combine until it's a harmonious lemonade base.
  • Step 4: Add the lemonade mixture to the pitcher with your brewed tea. Stir thoroughly until everything is beautifully blended together. Toss in 2 cups of ice to the pitcher and stir to help cool and gently dilute the drink.
  • Step 5: Taste the Iced Tea Lemonade and adjust to your preference for sweetness or tartness. If it's too strong or sweet, add a little more water or ice.
  • Step 6: When ready to serve, fill tall glasses generously with fresh ice. Pour the Iced Tea Lemonade over the ice and garnish with fresh lemon slices and a sprig of mint or basil. Serve chilled and enjoy!

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Experiment with different tea types like green tea, white tea, or spiced chai. For sweeteners, try honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or your favorite sugar substitute, ensuring they dissolve completely in warm water. Add a splash of lime or orange juice for a citrus twist, or muddle fresh berries or fruit purees for a fruity infusion. Infuse simple syrup with rosemary or lavender for a sophisticated aroma. For adults, add bourbon, gin, or vodka to make a "Hard Palmer". For a fizzy drink, top with sparkling water or club soda.
Tips for Success: Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best vibrant flavor. Avoid over-steeping black tea (10 minutes is ideal) to prevent bitterness. Ensure sugar is completely dissolved in the simple syrup for an even texture. Always taste and adjust sweetness/tartness to your preference. While ice helps, a good hour or two in the fridge before serving allows flavors to meld. Both brewed tea and simple syrup can be made a day or two in advance and stored separately in airtight containers in the fridge.
Storage: Store your Iced Tea Lemonade in a sealed pitcher or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Give it a good stir before pouring, as ingredients can sometimes separate. Always add fresh ice to individual glasses right before serving to prevent dilution.
