Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Mixing bowl
  • 9-inch Baking Dish
  • whisk or fork
  • Pastry Cutter or Fingers
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 6 large apples peeled, cored, sliced; mix of sweet and tart apples recommended (Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice to prevent browning
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter cold, cut into small cubes
  • salt pinch

Instructions

  • Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch baking dish.
  • Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until every apple slice is glistening and evenly coated.
  • Step 3: Transfer the fragrant apple mixture into your greased baking dish, spreading it out into a nice, even layer.
  • Step 4: In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Give it a little whisk with a fork to mix everything together.
  • Step 5: Drop your cold butter cubes into the dry ingredients. Work the butter into the flour mixture with your fingers or a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Do not overwork it.
  • Step 6: Generously sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples in your baking dish, ensuring the apples are completely covered. Then, pop it into your preheated oven.
  • Step 7: Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is a beautiful golden brown and the apples underneath are super tender when gently pierced with a fork. Your kitchen should smell heavenly!
  • Step 8: Allow your apple crumble to cool slightly before serving. Letting it cool helps the juices settle, making it even more delicious.

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: This versatile crumble can be made with other fruits like peaches, pears, or berries. Enhance flavor with extra spices (ginger, allspice, cardamom), nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds) or shredded coconut in the topping, or citrus zest in the apple mixture.
Serving Suggestions: While fantastic on its own, serve with a warm scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of fresh whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Tips for Success: Use cold butter for the topping and avoid overmixing to ensure a crisp, crumbly texture. Choose firm baking apples that hold their shape well. Adjust the granulated sugar in the filling based on the sweetness of your apples. Ensure you use an appropriately sized 9-inch baking dish to prevent overflowing.
Prep Ahead: You can peel and slice your apples and prepare the topping separately the day before. Store the apples (tossed with lemon juice) in an airtight container in the fridge, and the crumble topping in another container. Assemble and bake when ready.
Storage: Store cooled crumble loosely covered at room temperature for about 1 day. For longer storage, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days.
Reheating: Reheat individual servings in the microwave for a minute or two. For a crispier topping, reheat in a preheated oven (around 300°F/150°C) for 10-15 minutes until warmed through and crunchy again.
