Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Spatula
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  • Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. You can butter and flour the pan or line it with parchment paper.
  • Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves until evenly combined.
  • Step 3: In another bowl, whisk the melted butter, applesauce, and eggs until smooth and well combined.
  • Step 4: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake tender.
  • Step 5: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  • Step 6: Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  • Step 7: Let the cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute half the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour or swap granulated sugar for brown sugar. You can also add chopped nuts or dried fruit for extra texture and flavor.
