Equipment

  • 13x9 inch baking pan (or two round cake pans)
  • bowls
  • Knife or Skewer (optional)
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix plus ingredients called for on box (water, oil, egg whites)
  • Red food coloring gel or liquid, vibrant
  • Blue food coloring gel or liquid, vibrant
  • 1 container white frosting store-bought or homemade
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles or pop rocks nonpareils, jimmies, or pop rocks
  • Whipped topping or extra frosting optional, for serving or extra decoration

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prep Your Station. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your favorite 13x9-inch baking pan or two round cake pans.
  • Step 2: Mix the Batter. Follow the directions on your cake mix box to prepare the white cake batter. Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls.
  • Step 3: Add the Color! Leave one bowl of batter plain white. Add red food coloring to one bowl and blue food coloring to the other. Stir until you get vibrant shades you love.
  • Step 4: Create the Swirl. Drop spoonfuls of each color – white, red, and blue – alternately into your prepared cake pan. Optionally, gently swirl the colors together once or twice with a knife or skewer.
  • Step 5: Bake it Up. Bake according to the time specified on your cake mix box for your chosen pan size (a 13x9 is usually 28–32 minutes), until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  • Step 6: Frost and Decorate! Once the cake is completely cool, spread your white frosting all over the top. Shower the top with your red, white, and blue sprinkles or pop rocks. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: You can use vanilla or Funfetti cake mix. Try cream cheese or whipped vanilla frosting. Add fresh berries or edible stars. This recipe works for cupcakes too.
Tips for Success: Don't overmix the batter. Use gel food coloring for brighter colors. Swirl gently to maintain distinct colors. Cool the cake completely before frosting. Grease and flour the pan well to prevent sticking.
How to Store It: Store loosely covered at room temperature for 2-3 days. If using frosting requiring refrigeration (like cream cheese or fresh whipped cream), store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Let refrigerated cake sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.
