Equipment

  • Mixing bowl (medium-sized)
  • Silicone Molds (various shapes)
  • Wax paper or Parchment paper
  • Spatula or Spoon
  • Skewer or toothpick optional, for making holes to hang

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 20-30 drops essential oils your choice (e.g., lavender, lemon, peppermint, cinnamon, orange)
  • food coloring optional

Instructions

  • Step 1: Combine the Dry Ingredients: Grab a medium-sized mixing bowl. Pour in your baking soda and cornstarch. Mix them together thoroughly until they are completely combined and form a uniform, powdery blend.
  • Step 2: Add Water Gradually: Start adding the water slowly, stirring continuously as you go. Aim for a smooth consistency, like thick pancake batter. If it seems too dry, add a tiny bit more water (a teaspoon at a time). If it's too wet, add a tiny sprinkle of more baking soda or cornstarch.
  • Step 3: Stir in the Essential Oils: Drip in your 20-30 drops of essential oils. Give it another good stir, ensuring the aroma is distributed evenly throughout the mixture.
  • Step 4: Add Food Coloring (If Desired): If you wish to add color, add a few drops of food coloring and mix until you achieve a nice, uniform hue.
  • Step 5: Prepare Your Molds: Line a flat surface with wax paper or parchment paper for easy cleanup. Arrange your silicone molds on top.
  • Step 6: Fill the Molds: Carefully pour or spoon your mixture into the silicone molds. Do not overfill. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to gently smooth the tops for a neat finish.
  • Step 7: Release Air Bubbles: Gently tap the filled molds on your counter several times to allow tiny air bubbles to rise to the surface and pop, which helps create a smooth, solid stone.
  • Step 8: Set Them to Dry: Place your molds in a warm, dry spot in your home. Lightly cover them with a thin, breathable towel to protect them from dust or pets.
  • Step 9: Patience is a Virtue (for 24 Hours!): Let your aroma stones dry for at least 24 hours, or until they are completely hardened. Depending on your home's humidity, it might take longer. They should feel firm and solid to the touch.
  • Step 10: Unmold and Enjoy: Once totally dry, carefully pop the aroma stones out of their molds, being gentle. They are now ready to bring a lovely scent to any room.

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Experiment with different essential oil scent blends (e.g., lemon and eucalyptus for kitchen, cedarwood and bergamot for a reading nook). Use natural colorants like turmeric, spirulina, or beetroot powder instead of food coloring. Add a pinch of fine glitter for shimmer or gently press small dried botanicals (flowers, herbs, citrus zest) into the wet mixture for a visual touch. Before the stones fully harden, poke a small hole with a skewer or toothpick to thread a ribbon through and hang them.
Tips for Success: The right consistency (thick but pourable paste) is key to prevent crumbling or slow drying. Use the recommended amount of essential oils for a lasting scent; you can always add more to a dry stone later. Allow for full drying until they are rock hard before unmolding to avoid crumbling. Clean silicone molds immediately after use for easiest cleanup. Repurpose old silicone ice cube trays or candy molds.
Storage: Once completely dry and hardened, store any extra aroma stones in an airtight container (glass jar or sealed plastic bag) at room temperature to preserve their scent for longer. They typically hold their scent for several weeks to a couple of months. To revive the fragrance, simply add a few fresh drops of essential oil directly onto the stone.
Safety: While ingredients are generally non-toxic, essential oils can be potent. Keep aroma stones out of reach of young children and pets, especially if they tend to put things in their mouths. Research essential oil safety around specific pets if you have concerns.
